The Right Stuff: Rule No. 1 to avoid war is deterrence

Earl Heal: The Right Stuff Deterrence is defined as measures taken by a nation to prevent hostile action by another nation. The definition seems complete but lacks a definition of measures. History provides ample examples of inadequate measures meaning nothing to the aggressor. For effectiveness, measures must maintain military capability sufficient to willingly and unquestionably overcome the nation that is considering hostile action. Diplomacy is the first line of protection but diplomacy without military capability renders the diplomat totally ineffective in negotiation. When Syria threatened chemical warfare, President Barack Obama stated that is a red line to not cross. Syria tested. Obama failed. Russia took over. Syria won.

The Right Stuff: Great power, character a rarity but necessary

Jim McCully: The Right Stuff: Published April 18, 2022 I am quite disappointed with President Biden compared to former President Trump. One of our greatest, President Abraham Lincoln, said: “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.”

In America, nothing compares to the power and prestige of the President of the United States (POTUS). We have other powerful leaders in our Congress, and the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS). However, POTUS sets the nation’s tone. Americans have taken party identification to such extremes that what we called bi-partisanship, has become the exception rather than the rule. We citizens have no one to blame but ourselves as we, with one notable exception (SCOTUS), voted these people into power.[...read more]
